South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is deliberating on the possible reinstatement of suspended national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola, following the withdrawal of criminal charges against him. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided to drop the charges, citing no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution.
The charges against Masemola, which were withdrawn in a Pretoria magistrate’s court, involved alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act. These allegations were related to a South African Police Service healthcare tender awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District. The NPA’s decision came after a thorough review of the evidence collected by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, alongside assessments from a case panel and independent legal counsel.
Despite the withdrawal of charges, Masemola’s suspension remains in effect until President Ramaphosa makes a final decision on his reinstatement. The Presidency noted the NPA’s decision, but emphasized that the matter of reinstatement requires careful consideration.
General Masemola has expressed his readiness to resume his duties as national police commissioner. However, the broader investigation into the Medicare24 contract continues, with other individuals still facing scrutiny over alleged corruption and irregularities related to the tender.
