Sri Lanka and South Africa both achieved significant cricket victories on Thursday, with Sri Lanka pulling off a remarkable run chase against England in a One Day International (ODI) match, while South Africa triumphed over Australia in a Test match to level their series.

In a thrilling encounter, Sri Lanka chased down England’s formidable total of 429-4, reaching 430-8 to secure a two-wicket win. This result marked the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history. Despite a record-breaking innings from England’s captain Harry Brook, who scored 202 runs off just 116 balls—becoming the first England player to achieve a double century in men’s ODI cricket—England faced their second consecutive defeat in the tri-series.

Sri Lanka’s victory was orchestrated through a strong recovery after losing two early wickets, with a crucial 166-run partnership between Avishka Fernando, who scored 97, and Pavan Rathnayake, who impressed with 130 off 106 balls. Captain Dasun Shanaka further bolstered the innings with a rapid 97 from 50 deliveries. The decisive moment came from Janith Liyanage, who remained unbeaten on 61 from 27 balls. Needing six runs from the final two balls, Liyanage clinched the win with a six over long-off, sealing one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable ODI victories.

Simultaneously, South Africa celebrated a comprehensive victory over Australia in the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. Despite rain delays on the final day, South Africa managed to dismiss Australia for 295 in their second innings, securing the win by an innings and 31 runs. This victory leveled the series at 1-1 after Australia had claimed the first Test in Durban by 214 runs.

The outcome sets the stage for a decisive third Test in Cape Town, with both South Africa and Australia vying for the series win and crucial World Test Championship points. The competitive dynamics in these matches underscore the unpredictable and exhilarating nature of cricket, highlighting both Sri Lanka’s and South Africa’s resilience and strategic acumen on the global stage.
