A drone and missile strike targeting a military base in southern Saudi Arabia has been claimed by Iran-aligned Houthi fighters, amid escalating clashes with forces supporting the Yemeni government. The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, stated that the attack aimed at weapons depots and command-and-control centers at the Sharurah base. Saudi officials noted that a projectile struck near the Yemen border, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and several buildings in the vicinity, accompanied by reports of air-raid sirens in the area.
This assault coincides with a significant Houthi offensive along Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, where the group has seized control of key strategic locations, including a port city and areas near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, critical for global maritime shipping. In response, Yemeni government forces have initiated counterattacks against Houthi-held positions in the country’s southwest. Government representatives indicated that their forces are regrouping with plans to advance back towards the Red Sea coast following previous setbacks.
The intensifying conflict has reportedly resulted in the loss of over 500 lives and the displacement of tens of thousands. The United Nations has reported that nearly 86,000 people have been displaced, a majority since early September. The ongoing hostilities are impacting the region’s security and energy transport, with the Bab al-Mandab Strait gaining importance for Saudi oil exports due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz amid broader regional tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
