Zeekoevlei Dredging Project Boosts Local Economy, Enters Advanced Stage

The city of Cape Town is celebrating a significant achievement in the environmental restoration of Zeekoevlei, as dredging efforts advance from Storm Bay to Home Bay. This transition comes after nearly a year of intensive work, marking the first dredging operation at the site in over four decades. The initiative, which commenced in June 2025, has successfully removed over 207,000 cubic meters of sediment from Storm Bay.

This ambitious project aims to restore the vlei’s ecosystem by addressing issues of water quality degradation. The dredging operation is poised to remove decades of accumulated sediment and excess nutrients that have negatively impacted the environment. City officials emphasize that this effort is a critical component of a broader strategy to rehabilitate and safeguard vital waterways and natural habitats.

As the project enters its next phase, attention will turn to Home Bay, where approximately 157,000 cubic meters of sediment are projected to be extracted within the coming 10 months. The logistical challenge of relocating dredging equipment involved the installation of an additional two kilometers of pipeline and the repositioning of substantial mooring blocks across the waterbody. Sediment is then transported via a 6.3-kilometer slurry pipeline to designated dewatering ponds for drying and storage.

Eddie Andrews highlighted the city’s dedication to long-term environmental stewardship through such initiatives. The ongoing progress of the dredging operations is being closely tracked through regular hydrographic surveys, ensuring that the project remains on course. The full restoration of Zeekoevlei is anticipated to reach completion by early 2027, promising a rejuvenated natural asset for the region.
